When to See a Foot & Ankle Specialist
Consider scheduling an evaluation if you:
- Have pain lasting more than a few weeks
- Experience swelling that doesn’t improve
- Have difficulty walking or participating in daily activities
- Suffer repeated ankle sprains or instability
- Notice numbness, tingling or burning in your foot
- Have diabetes and develop a wound, ulcer or foot deformity
- Have been told you may need surgery or want a second opinion
Recovery Expectations
Every patient’s recovery is different but understanding what to expect can help you prepare.
Bunion surgery: Many patients begin walking in a protective surgical shoe within a few weeks, although complete recovery often takes several months.
Achilles tendon repair: Walking typically begins in a protective boot under your surgeon’s guidance before progressing to physical therapy. Returning to higher-impact activities often takes several months.
Fractures and reconstruction: More complex procedures generally require a longer period of healing followed by rehabilitation to restore strength, balance and mobility.
Understanding Complex Foot & Ankle Conditions
Charcot Foot
A condition most associated with diabetes that weakens the bones and joints of the foot. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent severe deformity and potentially reduce the risk of amputation.
Lisfranc Injuries
These injuries involve the ligaments and joints in the middle of the foot. They are often caused by sports injuries, falls or motor vehicle accidents and frequently require specialized evaluation.
Drop Foot
Drop foot makes it difficult to lift the front of the foot while walking. It may result from nerve injury, muscle weakness or neurologic conditions and can often be improved through specialized treatment.
Peripheral Nerve Disorders
Compression or injury to nerves in the foot and ankle can cause numbness, burning, tingling or chronic pain. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include conservative care or surgery.
