Community Programs

For the area resident who has need for medication injections, safe disposal of needles, syringes and disposable lancets is difficult. Medical waste from private residences may present risk to waste handlers since it may be contaminated with hepatitis, HIV, or other diseases.

Wood County Hospital provides a sharps container and disposal free of charge through our laboratory. This program is provided for the private sector only. All professionals and businesses are regulated under state and federal infectious waste laws and may not participate. 

How the program works:

1. Contact the Wood County Hospital Environmental services director at (419) 354-8923 to set up an appointment to enroll in this program.
2. Once you are enrolled in the program, you may pick-up  a red sharps container from Wood County Hospital Laboratory.
3. Perform your routine blood test or injection. Do not clip, break or recap needles. Place syringes and lancets directly into the red sharps container
4. Store your red sharps container in a safe place away from children and don’t overfill the container
5. Do not close and lock the container until it is filled and you are ready to exchange it.
6. When the container is full, use the locking mechanism on the sharps container lid to secure it. You can also use strips of tape across the top.
7. Return the sealed container to the Wood County Hospital Laboratory and pick up a new sharps container.

Wood County Hospital offers the Philips Lifeline Medical Alert Service to area residents. Lifeline can help you maintain your independence, and also give your family peace of mind. Lifeline is an easy-to-use medical alert service designed to reduce the risk of living alone. In the event of a fall or emergency, help is available at the push of a button.

The Lifeline Personal Help Button connects you to a trained Personal Response Associate who can send help quickly – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.The service offers security and peace of mind for your and your family.

Getting the Lifeline service is quick and simple.

Lifeline gives you greater peace of mind and adds to the safety you need to live independently in your own home. There is no equipment to buy and no long-term contract to sign.

Wheeled Meals provides more than 25,000 meals annually to elderly, homebound residents living within the Bowling Green city limits. A team of volunteers delivers three meals at a time to each subscriber Monday through Friday and holidays. Wood County Hospital contributions enable participants to pay a reduced cost to needs qualified candidates.

Wood County Hospital offers a Speakers Bureau for groups and organizations interested in having a speaker provide information and education about health-related issues. Our Speakers Bureau includes health professionals from a variety of disciplines who can discuss and answers questions regarding some of on a variety of topics. Wood County residents who have prescription and over-the-counter drugs that they wish to dispose of can now do so at two area locations: 

The following items can be returned:

Tablets, caplets, and all other solid dosage forms of medication. This includes prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

What can Not be returned

Liquids, plastics, glass pill containers, bio-hazards, used and unused syringes, drug paraphernalia or other medical waste or contaminants.
