Dreading Your Mammogram? New Technology Is Designed to Make It More Comfortable
Mammograms Aren't Known for Comfort. New Technology Is Helping Change That.
Guild-funded SmartCurve technology is designed to reduce discomfort while maintaining the high-quality imaging needed for breast cancer screening.
For many women, the hardest part of getting a mammogram isn’t making the appointment. It’s knowing how uncomfortable the exam can be.
A new addition at Wood County Hospital’s Women’s Imaging & Diagnostic Center is designed to help make that experience more comfortable.
Thanks to funding from the Wood County Hospital Guild, the center has added the SmartCurve® Breast Stabilization System to its 3D mammography equipment. The technology uses specially designed curved paddles that conform more naturally to the shape of the breast, helping reduce the pinching and discomfort women may experience during a mammogram while maintaining the image quality needed for breast cancer screening. The system includes three paddle sizes to better accommodate women with different breast sizes and body types.
For women who have put off a mammogram because of a previous uncomfortable experience, or who simply dread having one each year, that added comfort can make a difference.
“I have always dreaded mammograms because of how uncomfortable they can be, so this is a project that is especially meaningful to me,” said Christy Hinz, Wood County Hospital development and events coordinator. “If we can make the experience even a little more comfortable for women, while still providing the high-quality imaging they need, that’s something I’m very proud that the Guild could support.”
The SmartCurve system was funded with proceeds from this year’s Purse Extravaganza, turning a popular community event into an investment that women throughout the area can benefit from.
Each year, Guild members, event attendees, donors and community supporters help fund equipment and enhancements at Wood County Hospital. Those investments often translate into something very tangible for patients: a better experience, new technology or additional resources close to home.
This year, that impact can be felt by women every time they come through the doors for a mammogram.
Wood County Hospital is grateful to the Guild and everyone who supports its fundraising efforts. Their generosity continues to make meaningful investments in the health and experience of patients throughout our community.
