September WOW Award Winner – Ryan McFann, RN

The WOW Patient Experience Initiative recognizes team members who engage with patients/families, visitors and employees in exceptional ways, providing a superior level of commitment and reflecting the values of Wood County Hospital. Ryan McFann, RN, nursing supervisor and ER nurse, was selected as the September WOW award winner for going above and beyond for a patient.

In late August, Ryan took a call on a Friday night from the daughter of a patient of the Wound Healing Center at Wood County Hospital. Staff in the Wound Healing Center had verified that special dressing supplies to care for the patient’s wound were scheduled to arrive that day via mail delivery by 8:00 pm to the patient’s home. When the supplies were not delivered as scheduled, the daughter became concerned as the patient’s dressing was at the point of needing to be replaced. It was a weekend, and the Wound Healing Center was closed. The daughter knew it was important to find a solution to avoid complications in healing and avoid infection. Ryan took it upon himself to track down the orders in Cerner for the patient and proceeded to gather the supplies, including sterile saline, dressings, ABD pads, gauze wraps, and the tape that they would need to get through until Monday when the Wound Healing Center would be open. The patient’s daughter was extremely grateful for the quick actions provided by Ryan and was able to pick up the needed supplies for the weekend.

Ryan has been an ER nurse for the past 6.5 years and has served as a nursing supervisor at Wood County Hospital for the past 3.5 years. Ryan also formerly worked as an orderly at Wood County Hospital for 8 years. As a nursing supervisor and ER nurse, Ryan shared the most rewarding part is “taking care of and working alongside members of my community and being a trusted figure when people are at their most vulnerable.”
