Mammography

The Women's Center offers 3D Mammography

What is 3D mammography?

3D mammography is a tool designed for early detection of breast cancer. This imaging technology acquires a series of low-dose projection images of the compressed breast at different angles. The system produces images of thin slices of the breast one millimeter at a time that are then used to construct a 3d reconstruction of the breast.

The Exam

The 3D mammogram experience is similar to a traditional mammogram. During the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images of the breast at different angles. The radiologist can look through images of the entire breast like the pages of a book.

Why 3D?

3D Mammography finds 40% more invasive cancers than 2D alone.

This type of mammogram provides earlier detection by discerning cancers from dense breast tissue.

The testing provides better visualization of an abnormality's size, shape and location. The test can distinguish overlapping breast tissue from real cancers, affording less anxiety for women.
