Hernias

WHAT IS A HERNIA?

A hernia happens when part of an internal organ or body part protrudes into an area where it should not. The most common variety happens in the abdominal area. A small portion of the intestine pokes through a weak spot in the wall of the abdominal muscle. There is then a bulge under the skin, usually near the groin or navel.

HOW DO THEY HAPPEN?

Usually, hernias happen from:

  • Abdominal wall weakness from a previous hernia surgery
  • Heavy lifting
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Long-term coughing or sneezing

DO I NEED MY HERNIA REPAIRED?

A doctor will likely recommend surgery if there is tissue that becomes trapped in the abdominal wall. Serious complications can result when blood can get cut off from the tissue.

The hernia could also become strangulated and cause permanent damage, becoming a surgical emergency.
