What is a health screening?
A screening is a test or exam that's done to determine the presence of disease or changes in a person's health condition, possibly before symptoms are obvious. Screenings may reveal diseases or conditions early, when they may be easier to treat.
Why are they important?
Health screenings provide information to help a person better manage their own health care and improve their lifstyle.
But I feel fine and I live a healthy lifestyle. Why get screened?
It's possible to have a serious health condition and not recognize the symptoms. While it's true that you can influence your risk of developing health conditions based on your lifestyle choices - by eating healthy, exercising, not using tobacco and limiting alcohol intake - your age, race, and family history may still put you at risk for certain health problems.
Where do I start?
If you haven't had a health screening in the past 12 months, we strongly encourage you to come to the Wellness Works "Know Your Numbers" events beginning on January 11th, 2012 for some basic screenings. You will leave each event with some powerful health and wellness information. From there, you can work with your primary care physician or specialist to develop a plan together to improve or maintain your health. If you don't have a primary care physician, you can find one at Wood County Hospital by visitng www.woodcountyhospital.org, and click on "Find-a-Doctor" or calling (419)373-4195.
